...For me it is a deep personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet, out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era...in which lion and hyena come together, in a great and glorious future!
These were the words that started it all. Shadowy forms poured out from every corner and crevice of the landscape; their glowing eyes advertising their presence to everyone on Pride Rock. The lionesses stared wide-eyed at this unexpected development. They were uniformly dumbfounded; where was this idea of his coming from? Hyenas were to be despised! They had never seen this side of Scar before...
From the hyenas' point of view, they were finally getting what they deserved. What right did the lions have to keep the bountiful Pridelands all to themselves? No longer would these "mangy poachers" have to go a day without food. Yet, there was more to this than getting a free meal. Thoughts of vengeance infected their minds as well. They would make the lions feel the way that they were forced to feel. The most regal species in Africa would soon be forced to live like starving paupers while the "second-class" scavengers would have their fill of the land's best prey. Or so were the thoughts of most of the hyenas...
Ari was different.
He had not known of Scar's plot to kill the king and the prince. It was all an accident, right? Ari believed in Scar's intentions as honest and noble. In his mind, there was finally a lion that understood the hyenas. Ari was ready to welcome this brave new world with open paws and reap the rewards of his newly acquired rights. He knew that his new lioness acquantainces would look upon him with wary eyes at first, but he was hopeful that they would eventually warm up to him and accept him like a brother.
That next morning, after the shock of Scar's revelations had eased somewhat, Ari paced up to the stone den of his new home. Taking in the new scents with a deep breath, he surveyed its dark interior. A handful of eyes glared at him with suspision from within the shadows of their abode. Their breath was heavy and laden with low growls. Obviously, this wasn't going to be easy.
The hyena looked upon the lionesses with a humble expression, "Um, hey there. I'm sorry about your recent loss. Losing your leader and his heir must be devastating for you."
A few of the eyes turned and disappeared into the darkness. Apparently they didn't want to talk about it. At least not with him. One of the lionesses bared her teeth. Ari could see her toothy maw as it reflected the sunlight. "What would you care?!" she snarled before turning to follow the others deeper into the darkness.
"Tough crowd," he thought.

One ragged ear pricked at a sound beyond the den, but her fitful mind rejected it, clinging desperately to the sleep that way already twitching away. Nia blinked, feeling her unintelligible dreams release them from their grip, an instantaneous yawn stretching her wide toothy maw.
The stout lioness stretched quickly, her tail lashing as she heard voices, murmurs and growls beside, behind and all around her. She lifted herself from the warmth of a pridesister and turned her head towards the opening where one of them was speaking , the light outside was far too bright in the darkness to make out just what.
Her senses disoriented from an uneasy rest, she dragged herself to her feet and began to stalk, stepping with well learned carefulness around the sleeping lionesses, her blue eyes glinting in fierce annoyance.
She was not however prepared for what she saw in front of her face as she watched a lioness turn away sharply and retreat with the others, growling in rage and frusteration.
Nia herself said nothing when she found a hyena peeking into their den, where he had no place.
She stepped into the sunlight, blinking for a moment, her rage not written on her features, outwardly she appeared calm.
She did not look at the hyenas eyes as she spoke, rather she looked down at him like one would look at an insect.
"You have no business here". Her tone was crisp, matter o' fact.

As one lioness vanished into the darkness, another appeared to take her place. Ari's ears lifted in curiosity as she stepped further out into the daylight than the others. He waited to see what she would do.
"You have no business here," she spoke clearly. Her sharp blue eyes gave an additional punch to her words. He could tell that she was being quite serious, although her voice did not ring of obvious violence. The fact that she did not look him in the face told him that she didn't want confrontation. Despite this, pushing her was not something that he thought of as advisable.
Ari lifted his eyebrows as he yielded a non-threatening expression, "I know that this is your den. Believe me, I wasn't going to intrude in it. I'm not the type to disrespect your rights or property. I was only wanting to greet you. Our new king has buried the hatchet between our species and I was hoping to extend an olive branch to show that I don't have any hard feelings for your kind."
The hyena sat and pawed at the stone floor. Feeling the tension in the lioness' breath, he tried not to stare at her as he spoke, "If we are going to live together as King Scar has decreed, we should at least try to get along."
He snickered as he tried to lighten the mood, "It's not like we have to be best friends or soul mates, but it would help if we at least knew one-another's names. My name is Ari. I'm pretty much a normal guy. Just your run-of-the-mill hyena with no special position or privileges in his clan."
Ari gestured to the lioness with his right paw, "If you don't mind, I'd like to know how I should address you? What is your name?"

Akira smiled as she quietly woke from a dreadful nightmare. Images of the past king and his son dead haunted her. Even if she barely knew them she had been horrified when they died. But the past is in the past. Scar was right a new era is what we need. But who said we should like the idea of hyenas about our home at a decent sleeping time. She slowly pulled herself from the floor laughing. She used a warm trot to quickly find the troublemaker. She listened carefully to his words. They were all together stupid... Akira decided to go on anyways though.
"You wish to hear a name which to address her by? That's a bright idea, wake up the whole pride and then ask for one lioness name. Keep that up and someone might get hurt." Her tone was pleasant cheerful and sounded like teasing. Akira began to laugh. She looked at the annoyed lioness. Akira was now in the light easy to see. Her icy blue eyes became set on the hyena.
Akira smiled kindly. She showed her teeth to the hyena growled playfully and smiled again. She was simply teasing. "Ari you might not want to mention anything about the well you now, anymore because I have been deeply hurt already. How can I get over IT if you bring it up? I think you better shush now okay?" Akira was being nicer than some lions would be. Treating the Hyena like a cub was easier than facing the awful truth. A hyena on pride rock... Who could ever have thought this would happen.
Each passing moment was torture to Akira's mind. Her smile faded as she closed her eyes and sighed. She was thankful to be awake now but knew she should go back to sleep. Akira would have to rest for hunting. We will sometime run out of prey... Akira watched the hyena the other lioness must have threatened him or something. Akira's solemn eyes were not her usual welcoming ones. They showed tired and sad to strong feelings.
She waited to hear another's voice answer her own. It probably wouldn't take long

Nia took a long intake of breathe...she knew...she knew that if she reacted too aggresivly that it could land her and her pridesisters in deeper trouble...but Nia's opinion of hyenas was low, perhaps the lowest in the pride. Looking into Ari's large kind eyes, she saw not the intelligence and peace he seemed to radiate, but the hateful vicious energy that she had seen in the eyes of the fleeing hyenas whos he had battled, killed quite a few perhaps, and had...
Killed my mother.
But Nia knew she wasn't the only one with a vendetta against the hyenas, perhaps every lioness in the pride hated them, either for their misdeeds in their long long war, which had recently been driven underground by Scar's laws...or for simply being hyenas. The culture of lions, the instincts of lions was that these creatures were enemies.
Nia felt her anger heat under her fur, but again her voice was calm. For the first time however, her rage was unhidden on her features.
"Listen to my pridesister, ..and while your at it ...go while you still have legs to carry you back to your mates..if you hang around here you will not like what will occur..and it will have nothing to do with peace and harmomy".
Nia could not understand's Akira's mellowness, and it dug under her fur, her distate evident.

Nia's words pierced Ari through the heart. In shock he curled his tail between his legs and folded his ears back over his head. After taking a couple of steps backward to distance himself from the angry lioness, he realized that he had not thought this through as thoroughly as he should have.
He was being ignorant.
Ari was the kind of animal to believe, almost to the point of foolishness, that injecting good intentions into a situation would yield good results. He had obviously underestimated the strength of the raw hatred that had existed between their species. Ari, personally, hadn't really had any encounters with lions before Scar united their two groups. It seemed that he had missed an important lesson due to this. The hyena had not experienced firsthand what a lion could be like. Now he knew.
Although Akira didn't spew the same venom that Nia did, he understood that she wasn't happy to see him either. He had to leave. For his own sake and for their's. He was afraid to see what would happen if he pushed this much further.
"I'm sorry...I-I didn't mean any harm...I guess you're right...I should go..." Ari whimpered.
As he turned to leave, he kept an eye on the two predators. He lept from stone to stone until he had reached the grass-clothed earth below. Ari slunk out of sight into the shade behind Pride Rock. He realized that he had taken things too quickly. He shook his bowed head as he tried to make sense of what had just happened. For the first time, he was genuinely afraid. His thoughts raced towards the future. Would all the lionesses be this way? Could he really survive amongst them? Or would he have to stay in the company of the other hyenas and completely shun his feline cohabitants? He opened his eyes and lowered his brow in a grimace. Gritting his teeth in determination, Ari decided:
No. I won't back down this easily.
He would cut the tension. Abandoning his goal was not the solution. All he needed to do was reformulate his approach to the problem. The next encounter had to go more smoothly. He had to make sure that the circumstances were in his favor. Now, he was already getting ideas for how to go about doing this. The hyena stood up and walked out into the grasslands to think. When he returned, he hoped to have an ironed-out plan to make the transition into this new life easier.

Akira smiled as he left. She didn't feel like much sleep would come her way now. Peace? That was such a foolish thing to think of. Lions and Hyenas hate each other. We are natural enemies. Hyenas steal cubs and eat them for lunch. They have even killed adult lions. Akira was happy he had left. containing feelings is hard. Akira was glad her bad dream kept her from thinking about anything else. Akira did feel tired. Even if it meant that she would be tortured by her usual bad dreams. Akira knew the right thing to do was go back to sleep. By the time she woke up she would have to go hunting with her pride sisters. What was Scar thinking? How could he befriend those beasts.
Akira hoped he wouldn't come back. That hyena had put more damage on the lioness then anyone could think possible. Barging in pride rock and then talking about the deceased king and his son. Why would anyone decide to do that? Akira flicked her ears back and slowly walked back. Thinking one thing Stupid Hyenas She layed down next to another lioness and fell into her tormenting sleep.

OOC: I don't know if Nia is just taking a while with the reply or if she's given up on this. Let's not give up on this yet, guys. I know that Ari left, but that doesn't mean that this has to be the end of this RP. Our characters can meet back up later. Maybe you could put in some "filler" comments between now and then with you having to do some hunting for Scar, tending to cubs, taking a stroll, reflecting on your past, etc.

OOC: Well, I'm going to try to send Ari over to the other thread "Alone". I can can have him return to this thread, if needed. I'd like to know what Nia wants to do as well.
